Dog Days For Peace

By Connie Weineke

Sirius does not rise
in the dark, liquid sky
the month of February,
sky solid with remorse.

Nobody wants to forgive
these dog days for peace.
Hands and hearts can only
be expected to embrace

so much prayer. When
the fox screams across
fields, the sleepless moon,
the night lean in to listen.

from Homer’s The Illiad
